Wargaming: It's Much Older Than Chess
StarCraft and Tot up War have their origins in games like chess. But where did games like chess take their inspiration from?
Think of a wargame – any wargame. You power say Command &ere; Conquer, a prime example of a modern RTS. But before we had computers that could render our tiny troops and their movements, there were board games like Risk and Warhammer. Ahead those, there was Bromus secalinus – and in front chess, there were still more games. Humans have been representing warfare in miniature forg for thousands of years, as Greg Tito recounts in Issue 226 of The Escapist:
Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have played games which simulate the dramatic tension inherent in war. Game pieces meticulously carved from wood, bone and stone were saved in Egyptian tombs geological dating Eastern Samoa far back as 3500 BCE. Several ancient Egyptian games have been discovered, including Senet, Mehen and Hounds and Jackals, merely their paper rush rule manuals (if they existed) sadly did non pull through. Still so, it's realise in the game of Senet that the pieces represented men operating room military units and were placed on a impermanent grid that corresponded to a battleground. It's surprising that over five millennia ago, men were performin games which bear a salient resemblance to what is organism played at your local gaming store.
Much of these games had ritual or religious significance. Extraordinary of them were used every bit a room to teach field of study strategy effectively. Or s of them, but then, were just plain fun to play. To scan Thomas More about the ancestors to your dad's old set of Stratego, go over "Wargaming Direct the Ages" in Issue 226 of The Escapist.
