Bset Sites for Buying Capiz Shells for Arts and Crafts

DIY Capiz Shell Chandelier

Hello! I've got a footling how to for y'all today, it's how to make a wax paper capiz vanquish chandelier which we hung in our primary closet.  I had seen both real and fake capiz shell chandys and kept the project in the back of my heed for a rainy 24-hour interval – or a closet renovation.

Hither's how to make a wax paper cadiz crush chandelier, get set up for some pictures!

Your supplies:

  • Wax paper – I used three for this chandelier – become them at the dollar store
  • Wire handbasket or some frame for the chandelier – I used a hanging basket I plant at Big Lots
  • Spray paint – optional if y'all want to add together some color to the wax paper, which I did, or paint the basket
  • Circular circle punch – I've heard of people cutting the circles past hand. That'south craziness for me. Grab your 40% off coupon and head to the craft shop to buy a circle dial, they come in all kinds of sizes. ~ I used a ane i/ii inch round dial for this project
  • Fe
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine – I sewed my circles together, some people glue them
  • Hot glue gun and gum sticks

One time you lot have all of your supplies, paint the basket in the color you'd similar. I painted mine white to alloy in with the wax paper color. I chose this basket since the wires going around it were different sizes, meaning it would requite the chandelier layers as I put on the shells. See the minor wire circle at the top in this photo actually became the lesser of the chandelier. And then the widest circumvolve which is at the top of the basket was the tiptop of the chandelier once it was hung.

And I chose a uncomplicated basket so I didn't have to make a million shells. Four layers was enough.

Then prepare your wax paper. I ripped 30 sheets of wax paper, every bit close to the same size as I could. I didn't measure considering this is kind of a labor intensive projection anyhow and I knew information technology wouldn't affair.

Since I wanted some color to my "capiz" shells I decided to spray paint some of my wax paper. I didn't spray them solid, just in a random pattern to give some colour to the sheets of wax newspaper. The more random the better anyway since capiz shells are random in color by nature. I used silver spray pigment and laid them out in the backyard. This was the only fashion I could figure out how to do it! If form the neighbors recollect I'one thousand crazy anyway.

Do this on a non windy day!

Then you lot iron the wax paper together. I ironed 3 sheets, sometimes 2 manifestly and 1 painted and sometimes two painted and 1 apparently. It'south all upwardly to you if you paint them or not. I wanted some color variation so I but threw together three sheets and ironed them. I believe I painted about xxx sheets and then tore 30 plain/non painted sheets and used a combination of those.

Fe them between two pieces of parchment paper, which I didn't find at the dollar store just it's available with blistering supplies or paper appurtenances at other stores. You need the parchment newspaper because otherwise the wax paper volition melt.

The ironing I plant was the longest part of this projection. I was anxious to become the newspaper ready to make the shells.

Once your wax paper is ironed together y'all can so start punching out the circles. I recommend a new or sharp circle punch. I call back mine is getting a little dull because sometimes the circles didn't punch all the way around. This is frustrating to say the least and I wasted a bunch of newspaper doing information technology. You lot tin can see the pattern of the silver spray paint on this paper and how I folded each piece accordion fashion in the upper correct so I could punch more than one at a time.

Fold and dial, fold and punch.

It will get messy people. If circles go off-target, take a flick then pick them up after 🙂 Here's our shiny dining room floor, which is non that ruby-red in person. If course this project might take you burning the midnight oil, hence the nightime pictures.

So run up your circles together. Again, I've seen people glue them to strips of ribbon, but you can try it anyway you have resources or patience for. The sewing actually didn't take very long. I merely sewed a bunch of strands, and then glued them on so sewed and so glued and echo. That way I fabricated enough for what I needed.

My strands were x circles long.

Once sewn together, you'll have this. Strands of wax paper circles. I cut mine 10 long considering I determined that I would have them over the basket in half, doubling the strand per say, and five long was a good length for my basket frame. When sewing them together I didn't exactly alternate painted paper to non painted paper, once more that would have taken way too long. I only grabbed some and fed them into the sewing machine.Don't worry nigh the small gaps of thread in between if you sew them. Try not to make too many but the imperfections will add to the menstruation of the shells once they are on the handbasket.

I kept my circles in a basin and then fed them into the sewing auto very quickly. I did long lengths of them at a fourth dimension, then I cut the long strand into smaller ones 10 circles long. Again, don't waste your time stopping at every ten circles. You'll have to cut all that actress thread and information technology volition accept forever.  This way to you don't take to cut any thread between the circles.

Now you lot assemble the chandelier! This was really the quickest function. Just catch a strand, some hot mucilage and  go.Put a dab of hot glue on the wire part and hang the strand right on the glue in half so you take five circles on one half and five on the back half. The strand will so hang over the handbasket wire.

I overlapped the strands past near half like this. It will have more if you lot put them closer together, but the chandy volition expect fuller also. I felt that this overlap amount would make the chandelier every bit full as I wanted.

Start at the bottom of the basket and piece of work you way up. Yous don't desire to accept to motion the strands effectually to attach them underneath. Get in easy on yourself and work from the bottom upwards.I hung the chandelier on some shelves in the dining room and simply turned it as I glued on the strands of wax circles/shells.

Then you hang her up! Here you can just see the end of the the wire bondage from the basket that I hooked onto the picayune screws that concord a drinking glass bulb to the ceiling fixture. Make sure you lot paint the chains, because even though they are not visible from the ground, you want them to alloy in. I also painted the ceiling fixture white.

I love how you lot can come across the shades of silver spray pigment in the "shells".

You lot might even want to paint your ceiling {depending on where yous put this} to make the chandelier stand up out. I retrieve the effect of the white and silvery against the blue is the whole bespeak! Very dramatic don't you think?

So what do you lot recall? Did I exit anything out, anything else you desire to know? Think yous'll brand one for yourself? I love it, I just might make another 🙂
